In term of the material, ceramic sinks are made of clay, while solid surface basins are made with an acrylic solid surface material. Normally the surface of ceramic basin is harder than solid surface basin and is much more scratch resistant. Solid surface basin is slightly softer and can be scratched occasionally, but fortunately these tiny scratches can be buffed off by sanding and polishing.
On the other hand, public bathrooms usually require extra long vanity basins. Solid surface basins can be made at any size, whereas with ceramic it will be very difficult and expensive to produce. Thus, solid surface basin is good for making extra large size vanity basins.
If taken good care, both ceramic and solid surface sinks can be used for decades. After many years of use, they will become slightly darker in color compared with news. It is recommended to regularly wipe over the basin with normal household cleanser to clean thoroughly.
