A countertop is an inseparable part of a kitchen just like a kitchen sink, faucet, and other kitchen fixtures. As one of the most common types, the butcher block countertop is often used in rustic or country-style houses. This type of countertop has become the preference of a large number of homeowners’ preference thanks to the benefits it offers.

However, the butcher block countertop is not unalloyed good. Now, let’s take a view at the upsides and downsides that a butcher block countertop has.

Upsides of butcher block countertops
They are at affordable prices. Butcher block countertops are cheaper than other popular options, such as stainless steel and glass countertops. Besides, butcher block countertops are accessible to DIY- installation. You can save more money through installing the countertop by yourself.

They are easy to clean. For daily cleanup, wipe off the debris with a cloth and scrape hard stains with a plastic spatula. Vinegar also works to remove hard stains.

The materials and grains are optional. Butcher block countertops can be further categorized into various types based on the specific materials that they are made of, such as maple, cherry, walnut, and oak, etc. They each present different looks. You can also define the grains and patterns.

They are durable. Butcher block countertops are much less likely to break. With proper cleaning and care, they can last for 20 years or so.

The downsides of butcher block countertops
They are sensitive to damp environments. Germs, mold, and stains are more likely to build up on the wood surface in a damp environment. That’s why it’s often suggested that wood should be kept away from bathrooms.

They are susceptible to temperature. Wood shrinks and expands as the temperature changes. Therefore, it’s possible for the owners to find that their butcher block countertops are larger than usual in summer and smaller in winter. Apart from that, butcher block countertops are likely to be damaged by hot items. For example, a hot pot may burn the surface if a mat is not placed.
